Long names made of short words

Some Afrikaans animal names are two words in one. kameelperd (giraffe) is kameel (camel) plus perd (horse), and seekoei (hippo) is see (sea) plus koei (cow). Finding the small words inside helps your child spell the long one.

bobbejaan (baboon) has a double b in the middle, and voΓ«l (bird) has two dots on the e, which count in a test.

How to say them

hoender (chicken) has oe, said like the oo in food. leeu (lion) sounds like β€œlee-oo”. vark (pig) starts with an f sound, because v sounds like f. luiperd (leopard) has the ui sound, which is close to the ay in day, said with rounded lips.
