Grade 2 Afrikaans spelling words

In Grade 2, Afrikaans spelling moves on to long vowels: two letters that make one sound, like aa in maan and oe in boek. Here are three sets of typical Grade 2 words with their English meanings. Tap any word to hear it.

Set 1 has aa and ee, Set 2 has oo and uu, and Set 3 has ie and oe. If your child’s list is different, press β€œPractise these words” and change them.

How to say the long vowels

aa is a long β€œah”, as in father. ee sounds like the ear in near, so twee sounds like β€œtw-ear”. oo is a long β€œoo-uh”, as in boom. ie is like the ee in see, and oe is like the oo in food. uu has no English sound: say β€œee” with your lips rounded, and you are close.

The one rule that helps most

A long vowel is written with two letters when a consonant closes the syllable: maan, boom, muur. When the word grows and the syllable opens, one letter is enough: maan becomes mane (moons) and boom becomes bome (trees). The sound stays long. This does not happen with ie and oe, which always keep both letters.

Practise two or three words a day. If a word is wrong twice, look at it together and point to the two letters that make the long sound.
