How the letters sound

Afrikaans is mostly spelt the way it sounds, which makes it a kind first spelling language. A few letters sound different from English. v sounds like an f, so vis sounds like β€œfis”. w sounds like a soft v, so wit sounds like β€œvit”. g is a rough sound in the throat, like the ch in the Scottish word loch.

The short a in kat sounds close to the u in the English word cut. The d at the end of hond and bed sounds like a t, but it is still written with a d.

Five minutes a day

At this age, little and often works best. Do four or five words at a time. Let your child hear the word, say it back, and then type it. If the first sound is right, say so: that is real progress in Grade 1.
