Afrikaans days of the week

The days of the week are often one of the first Afrikaans spelling lists. Here they are, from Maandag (Monday) to Sondag (Sunday), with a second set of time words like vandag (today) and môre (tomorrow). Tap a word to hear it.

Remember the capital letter. Afrikaans days start with a capital, just like in English, and the app marks it.

Easy to remember

Every day ends in dag, which means day. Most days are close to English: Sondag is Sunday, Maandag is Monday (maan means moon), and Saterdag is Saturday. Vrydag is Friday, but it is spelt with a y, and the V sounds like an f.

Dinsdag, Woensdag and Donderdag need the most practice. Woensdag has oe, said like the oo in food, and its W sounds like a v. Donderdag means thunder day.

The word môre

môre means tomorrow, and it can also mean morning. It has a little hat on the ô, and a test counts it wrong without it. oormôre is the day after tomorrow, and eergister is the day before yesterday. Only the days of the week get a capital letter; words like vandag and naweek do not.
