Words to watch

uitveër (eraser) has two dots on the last e, so you say it in three beats, not two. skêr (scissors) has a little hat on the e. Both marks count in a test.

juffrou (Miss, a female teacher) has a double f. onderwyser is the general word for a teacher. pouse is break time. klaskamer is klas plus kamer (room), written as one word.

Use the real classroom

Practise with things your child can hold. Put a potlood, an uitveër and a liniaal on the table. Say the English word, let your child pick the thing up, then tap the Afrikaans word on this page to hear it before they type it.
