Grade 5 Afrikaans spelling words

By Grade 5, Afrikaans spelling words get longer. Many start with a small front part like be-, ge-, ver- or ont-, and many end in -ing or -sie. Below are three sets of typical Grade 5 words with English meanings. Tap a word to hear it.

If your child’s list is different, press β€œPractise these words” and swap in the real words.

Break long words into parts

Long words are easier in chunks. onthou is ont and hou, verstaan is ver and staan, and uitnodiging is uit, nodig and ing. Say the word slowly, clap the parts, and spell one part at a time. The Slow button in the app (the tortoise) helps here.

Watch the double letters. verras (to surprise) has one s, but when -ing comes after the short a, the s doubles: verrassing.

Sounds that trick children

v and f sound the same, so vergeet sounds as if it starts with an f. At the end of a word, that sound is written f, as in skryf. A d at the end sounds like a t, so verskillend ends in a d that sounds like a t. And ei and y sound the same, so learn which one each word takes.
