Words to watch

reΓ«n (rain) has two dots on the second e. They tell you to say the two e’s separately, in two beats. Without the dots, the word is wrong. hael (hail) has no dots, even though it also has two vowels side by side: ae is not a sound pair in Afrikaans, so nothing needs to keep them apart.

weer means weather, but it also means again. mis is fog, and ryp is frost.

The seasons

somer (summer) and winter are close to English. herfs is autumn and lente is spring. Practise by talking about today: is it warm or koud, sonnig or bewolk? Let your child type the word that fits.
