Afrikaans food words

Food words are easy to practise, because you see them every day. Here are two sets: fruit and vegetables, and meals and food from the kitchen. Each word has its English meaning, and you can tap it to hear it said.

Try it at supper: name the food on the plate, then let your child type the Afrikaans word in the app.

Words to watch

piesang (banana) and lemoen (orange) look nothing like English, so they need extra practice. aartappel (potato) means earth apple; note the t in the middle. ontbyt, middagete and aandete are breakfast, lunch and supper: middagete is middag (midday) plus ete (meal).

How to say them

brood (bread) has the long oo, said like β€œoo-uh”, and the d at the end sounds like a t. vleis (meat) has ei, said like the ay in day, and its v sounds like an f, so it sounds like β€œflays”. groente starts with the rough Afrikaans g, like the ch in loch.
