Afrikaans body parts

Parts of the body make a fun Afrikaans list, because your child can point while they practise. Here are two sets, the head and face and the rest of the body, with English meanings. Tap a word to hear it.

Some words have a plural that looks quite different, like oog (eye) and oΓ« (eyes), so check which form the list from school uses.

Words to watch

oΓ« (eyes) has two dots on the e. They show that the o and the e are said separately, like β€œoo-uh”. Without the dots, the word is wrong. hare is the hair on your head.

Some words mean something else in English. rug is not a rug: it is your back. been means leg (and also bone), and oor means ear (and also over).

Play while you practise

Say a word from the list and let your child touch that part of the body before they type it. Then swap: your child points, and you find the word on this page and tap it to hear it. It takes five minutes, and words stick better when your child moves.
