Afrikaans colours

Colours are a favourite early Afrikaans list. Here are the main colours, from rooi (red) to oranje (orange), and a second set of colour words like ligblou (light blue) and reรซnboog (rainbow). Tap any word to hear it.

In Afrikaans, colours are written with a small letter.

How to say the colours

rooi sounds like โ€œroyโ€, and blou sounds a bit like blow. geel starts with the rough Afrikaans g, like the ch in loch, and its ee sounds like ear. wit sounds like โ€œvitโ€, because w sounds like a v. swart has that v sound too: โ€œsvartโ€.

pers (purple) and pienk (pink) are easy to mix up, so practise them together. In oranje, the j sounds like a y.

Colour words joined together

Light and dark colours are written as one word: lig and blou make ligblou, and donker and groen make donkergroen. The same goes for kleurpotlood, a colouring pencil. One colour is kleur; more than one are kleure.
