Grade 3 Afrikaans spelling words

Grade 3 brings the Afrikaans sounds that English speakers find hardest: ui, ei, eu, ou and y. Children also start to spell compound words, where two short words join into one long one. Below are three sets of typical Grade 3 words with English meanings. Tap a word to hear it.

Lists differ from school to school, so press β€œPractise these words” and change any word to match your child’s list.

How to say the tricky sounds

ei and y sound exactly the same, a bit like the ay in day. That is why children mix them up: klein has ei, but tyd has y. No rule tells you which one a word takes, so learn each word as it is written.

ui in huis has no exact English sound. It is close to the ay in day, said with rounded lips. ou in koud sounds a bit like the o in go. eu in neus is not found in English either: try the u in fur, with rounded lips.

Compound words

Afrikaans writes compound words as one word, with no space: voet and bal make voetbal, and son and skyn make sonskyn. Help your child find the two small words inside the long one. If they can spell each part, they can spell the whole word.
