Afrikaans numbers

Number words are a common Afrikaans spelling list. Here are the numbers from een (one) to twintig (twenty), and the tens from dertig (thirty) to honderd (hundred). Tap a number to hear it.

There are three sets, so your child can do one a day.

Patterns that help

From 13 to 19, the numbers end in tien, like the English -teen: dertien, veertien, vyftien. The tens end in tig, like the English -ty: dertig, veertig, vyftig. Say the ending clearly, because dertien (13) and dertig (30) sound alike.

Watch these: vier (4) becomes veertien (14) and veertig (40), with ee instead of ie. agt (8) becomes agtien (18) with one t (some schools write agttien: both are accepted, so check your child’s list), and tagtig (80) starts with a t. sewe (7) and nege (9) add an n: sewentien, negentien, sewentig, negentig.

Practise in small groups

Twenty-nine words is a lot in one go. Do one set a day: one to ten, then eleven to twenty, then the tens. Let your child say each number out loud before typing it.
