Grade 6 Afrikaans spelling words

Grade 6 Afrikaans words are long and often built from smaller parts. Below are three sets of typical Grade 6 words: school words, feelings, and longer everyday words. Each has its English meaning, and you can tap any word to hear it.

Your child’s real list changes every week. Press β€œPractise these words” and change the set to match it.

Endings to look out for

Many Grade 6 words end in -ing, -heid, -skap, -nis or -ig. Once your child knows the ending, only the front of the word is left to learn: gemeenskap is gemeen plus -skap, and geskiedenis ends in -nis. The ending -ig, as in nuuskierig, sounds like β€œuh” followed by the rough Afrikaans g.

Words with -heid change in the plural: geleentheid becomes geleenthede.

A five-minute routine for older children

Older children can practise on their own. Ask for five minutes a day: listen, type, and fix what the app marks. The words your child gets wrong come back more often, so the time goes where it is needed. The day before the test, do the whole list once more.

Got this week’s list from school?
