Afrikaans months of the year

The Afrikaans months look a lot like the English ones, and that is exactly what makes them tricky: the small differences are what a spelling test checks. Here are all twelve months, from Januarie to Desember, plus a set of other time words. Tap a word to hear it.

Like English, the Afrikaans months start with a capital letter. The app counts the capital, so januarie is marked β€œalmost”, not right.

Spot the differences from English

Januarie, Februarie, Junie and Julie end in -ie, where English ends in y or e. Maart has a double a, Mei is spelt with ei, and Augustus adds -us. Oktober uses a k and Desember uses an s where English has a c.

April, September and November are spelt exactly as in English, so those are easy points.

How to say them

The -ie at the end sounds like ee, and the J sounds like the y in yes, so Junie sounds a bit like β€œyoo-nee”. Mei sounds close to the English word may. Practise six months a day: January to June on one day, July to December the next.
